Aluminum Versus Steel Boat Trailer

Aluminum trailers vs. steel trailers when the all-aluminum horse trailer came on the market in the 1970s, pioneered by featherlite trailers, it had a huge advantage over steel as a manufacturing material.. Aluminum is lighter, towing. when you sell it opens you to more buyers as the salt guys can't have steel steel may be stronger, but a good quality aluminum won't flex that much.. Aluminum trailers weigh on average 10 – 15% less than steel trailers. this means that you’ll be able to haul more with an aluminum trailer versus a steel one. (your haul weight is your trailer weight minus your axle load bearing capacity.) additionally, you’ll save money on gas when you happen to not be carrying a load..

Aluminum alloy can be nearly as strong as some steels, but most trailers aren't made of those super-strong mixtures. the fact is that steel is far less likely to flex and bend under load, and the welds that join steel are generally superior to those on aluminum.. Have had an aluminum trailer before and currently have a galvanized. both did(do) the job. aluminum trailer flexed a lot with fully loaded boat and was a bitch to pull empty for any distance. a small bump in the road would cause it to jump up in the air.. If you sink your trailer to float your boat and you fish salt, then an aluminum trailer is probably your best choice. but if you set your trailer up properly, only the tires get salty, and then a galvanized steel trailer will be the bargain. if you only fish fresh, then a painted steel trailer will be fine..
