I discovered a leak in my 250 gallon aluminum fuel tank on my 44 foot motor yacht and searched for a company to repair or replace my tank that was professional, efficient and fair. through a marine engineer, we located sp marine after a thorough search.. The end result is two aluminum tanks which are coated completely with epoxy and fiberglass, in effect creating a tank within a tank. with a bit of luck these should last the life of the boat, and the repair cost me well under $100, a fraction of the cost of new tanks.. The thing about aluminum boat tanks is, by the time they develop their first 'thru' leak, there are usually more about to occur and if it's an original workmanship issue, the rest of the tank is at least suspect as well. for what a custom boat tank costs, vs the amount of years they last, it's usually false economy to repair one.. I also remember reading somewhere that aluminium fuel tanks (in boats) have an average life span of 5 to 7 years. can't remember the reasoning or the source. it does raise the question, depending on the condition of the tank, of whether a new replacement tank is an option.
