Build Kevlar Boat
A kevlar boat begins with a highly polished mold cast from one of our wooden guideboats. this is probably the 5th or the 8th generation of this mold. we can only build 300 or 400 boats from a mold before it begins to degrade and produce less than perfect boats.. In such, only the boat's designer can really answer your questions. if you have a design and want it converted to include a carbon/kevlar laminate, then you'll have to employ a designer or na to engineer a new laminate schedule that reflects the loads imposed.. Building a kevlar guideboat 1. make a mold. each kevlar composite boat starts with a 300-pound fiberlass mold cast from one of the company's wooden models.. The layup schedule for this boat is (starting from the inside) 9 oz kevlar, 9 oz kevlar, 6 oz s-glass, 6 oz s-glass, all full layers. it is a thick and heavy layup. most canoes built in this method use 1 9 oz layer of kevlar, 1 full layer of s-glass, and 1 partial layer of s-glass on the bottom. i don't like messing with partial footballs.. With the kevlar canoes starting at about $1400 (us) and up it just was not happening. i saw the the book building your kevlar canoe: a foolproof method and three foolproof designs by james moran. i read the book and my first thought was "this is too complex, there is no way i will be able to build a kevlar canoe"..
